Report: Wizards gave GM Grunfeld contract extension last fall

The Washington Wizards quietly gave longtime general manager Ernie Grunfeld a contract extension prior to this season, sources told the Washington Post's Candace Buckner.

Terms were not reported, but the deal keeps Grunfeld in charge of basketball operations through at least next season, according to Buckner.

Grunfeld was hired in 2003. Only the Spurs' R.C. Buford and the Celtics' Danny Ainge have been in current top NBA executive jobs longer than he has. That's a bone of contention among many Wizards observers, who are quick to point out the team has a .442 winning percentage during Grunfeld's tenure and hasn't been past the second round of the playoffs.

While featuring two All-Star backcourt players in John Wall and Bradley Beal, there's a sense that the Wizards' core has grown stagnant over the last few seasons. Wall himself opined publicly last week that it might be time for a roster shake-up.

The Wizards possess a first-round draft pick this June for the first time since 2015.
