The New York Yankees have placed left-handed starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery on the 10-day disabled list with a flexor strain in his left elbow.

Montgomery left Tuesday's start with elbow tightness after throwing only seven pitches. He returned to New York to be further evaluated by the team physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Montgomery could be out for up to two months, according to Sweeny Murti of WFAN. He won't throw at all for two-to-three weeks and will miss upward of eight weeks. Otherwise, the manager is optimistic.

Boone added that "there's nothing that would suggest" Tommy John surgery is on the horizon, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

The left-hander had been dealing with tightness in his pitching elbow in the days prior to the game and had been attempting to work through it with exercises and private treatment.

"It was giving me fits for a little while," Montgomery told Hoch. "I thought I could throw through it. I've been doing a little extra treatment and little exercises. In college and the Minor Leagues, I've been able to grind through something like this. But it gave me a little discomfort."

Through six starts, including Tuesday's brief outing, Montgomery is 2-0 with a 3.62 ERA. Domingo German will draw the start on Sunday, May 6 against the Cleveland Indians in Montgomery's place.
