Yost didn't know what Royals' record was until he checked Thursday

All this losing in Kansas City might be taking a toll on Ned Yost.

Just three years ago, the veteran skipper was celebrating after guiding the Royals to a second consecutive AL pennant and their first World Series title in three decades. Things have changed dramatically, as Yost's Royals now have the worst record in the American League with a .227 winning percentage.

The losses are coming fast and furious, to the point that Yost can't even keep up. He even admitted as much when he revealed that he didn't know what the Royals' record was prior to Thursday - and said he was actually relieved once he looked it up.

"I don't look at our record, and thank god because I thought we were 5-20, and we're only like 5-17," Yost said Thursday, according to Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star. "So we're better than I thought we were."

Indeed, Kansas City entered play Thursday sporting a woeful 5-17 record, with just two of those five victories coming in the last two weeks. The team's 18 home runs rank 27th in MLB, and their 72 runs scored are dead last. Things aren't much better on the mound, as Yost's pitching staff owns a combined 5.18 ERA while averaging a league-worst 6.81 strikeouts per nine innings.

While the 63-year-old may not open his newspaper app to the "standings" page on a daily basis, he may be interested in checking out some projections for his team. Fangraphs is positive about the Royals, projecting that they will avoid the 100-loss mark despite the awful start - but still has them bottoming out at 67-95 after game No. 162.
