Having parted ways with the Atlanta Hawks, Mike Budenholzer has emerged as a "strong candidate" for the New York Knicks' head coaching vacancy, sources told Newsday's Al Iannazzone.

The Knicks interviewed Budenholzer on Sunday, according to multiple reports, three days before he left the Hawks.

New York hasn't made the playoffs since 2013. However, despite the dysfunction around Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan, the Knicks could be an attractive opening given the market and franchise centerpiece Kristaps Porzingis.

The Knicks also interviewed lead Boston Celtics assistant Jay Larranaga, according to Iannazzone.
