Report: Gerrard on shortlist to become next Rangers manager

Steven Gerrard's path to becoming a first-team manager could take the former Liverpool star north of the border, as reports suggest he has been shortlisted to succeed Graham Murty as Rangers boss.

The Scottish team is believed to be in the process of producing a list of candidates to replace Murty, who took temporary charge in October following the dismissal of Pedro Caixinha before being appointed manager until the end of the season.

It's understood Murty is unlikely to be considered once the campaign concludes.

Despite his lack of experience as a first-team manager, Gerrard, who retired as a player in 2016 following his storied career at Liverpool and a brief spell in Major League Soccer with the LA Galaxy, is believed to have held talks with Rangers officials about possibly moving to Glasgow this summer, according to Ewan Murray of the Guardian.

Gerrard rejected an opportunity to manage League One outfit MK Dons shortly after announcing his retirement and instead accepted a coaching role with Liverpool before becoming the manager of the team's under-19 squad in September.

His possible appointment as manager of the Scottish Premiership club could add fuel to the bitter rivalry between Rangers and Celtic if Gerrard ends up squaring off against his former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.
