Pistons part ways with Van Gundy; reportedly interested in Brent Barry
The Detroit Pistons have parted ways with head coach and team president Stan Van Gundy.
Pistons owner Tom Gores confirmed in a statement to David Aldridge of NBA.com that although Van Gundy wanted to return for the final season of his five-year deal, finding new management was "necessary."
Van Gundy had extensive talks with Pistons ownership in recent weeks about transitioning into a new role with the organization that did not include front-office responsibilities, but the coach was resistant to the idea.
Having missed the playoffs in three of Van Gundy's four seasons at the helm, the Pistons wanted to keep the roles of coach and basketball operations separate, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
One candidate for the Pistons' front office is TNT analyst Brent Barry, according to Wojnarowski. Barry was formerly a client of Arn Tellem, who is now advising the Pistons.
Van Gundy led the Pistons to a 152-176 record in four seasons with the team. They were swept in his only postseason appearance in 2016.
