Yankees acquire A.J. Cole from Nats

The New York Yankees bolstered their rotation depth Monday, acquiring right-hander A.J. Cole from the Washington Nationals in exchange for cash considerations, the team announced.

Additionally, Cole has been added to the Yankees' 40-man roster, and right-hander David Hale has been designated for assignment. Cole will soon be added to the Yankees' active roster, as well.

Selected in the fourth round of the 2010 draft, Cole was once considered among the more promising pitching prospects in the game, but the 26-year-old wasn't able to distinguish himself in his limited time at the big-league level with the Nationals. Over parts of four seasons in Washington, Cole managed a 5.32 ERA across 19 starts and seven relief appearances, with most of his appearances coming either on an emergency basis or as a September call-up.

This year, Cole made the Nationals' rotation out of spring training but quickly lost his job, allowing 10 earned runs in his season debut and making just one more start before being relegated to the bullpen. He was designated for assignment last week.
