The St. Louis Cardinals placed veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright on the 10-day disabled list Sunday due to right elbow inflammation.

In a corresponding move, the Cardinals recalled right-hander John Brebbia from Triple-A Memphis.

Wainwright, who started the season on the DL due to a hamstring injury, showed no signs of discomfort during Tuesday's start against the Chicago Cubs, allowing only one unearned run on four hits and four walks while recording five strikeouts over five innings. Through three starts this year, the 36-year-old owns a 3.45 ERA (112 ERA+) and 1.53 WHIP.

The three-time All-Star has battled recurring elbow problems throughout his 13-year career, with various strains, tears, and impingements necessitating multiple surgeries and trips to the disabled list. Most recently, following a disappointing 2017 campaign in which he posted a career-worst 5.11 ERA over 123 1/3 innings, Wainwright had a flap of cartilage surgically removed from his elbow in October.

Shortly after landing on the DL on Sunday, though, Wainwright attempted to downplay concern on Twitter, assuring his followers that "all will be well in a few days."

"I think it's smart, taking advantage of the 10-day DL," added Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. "(It will) give him a chance to get ahead of this so it's not something that sticks around the rest of the season."
