Yankees' Gray not alarmed by dip in velocity

Andy Marlin / USA TODAY Sports

Sonny Gray didn't have his best stuff Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The New York Yankees right-hander allowed five runs on five hits and four walks without recording a strikeout through 3 1/3 innings in the 8-5 loss. He also saw his average four-seam fastball velocity drop to 91.4 mph, lower than in any of his previous three starts this season.

Gray says his heater has cooled off largely due to the temperatures, and is not due to a physical ailment.

"I feel fine. It's 40 degrees outside," Gray told MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "I don't think anybody is throwing as hard as they're going to in the middle of summer. I feel good."

While manager Aaron Boone isn't ready to hit the panic button, he said it's something the team will monitor.

"We're seeing a lot of 90, 91 with the fastball," Boone said. "It looked like he just couldn't reach back for much more. We'll look at it and evaluate it and work real hard now to continue to get him right."

Gray will get a chance to showcase his fastball again when the Minnesota Twins come to Yankee Stadium early next week.
