A return to the past may not be in the cards for the New York Knicks and Jeff Van Gundy.

The team has not shown any interest at this point in considering Van Gundy as a candidate for their head coaching vacancy despite some contact, sources told ESPN's Ian Begley.

Van Gundy, who currently works as a broadcaster for ABC/ESPN, is open to talking to the Knicks, Begley reports.

The 56-year-old coached New York from 1996-2001, leading them to a surprise NBA Finals appearance in 1999 and endearing himself to much of the team's fan base. Multiple reports recently have suggested Van Gundy as a possible candidate to replace Jeff Hornacek, who was fired Wednesday.

Van Gundy last coached in the NBA in 2006-07 with the Houston Rockets, but last year took the role of coaching Team USA's World Cup qualifying group, leading some to believe he was interested in a full-time return to the bench.
