Rockets GM Morey: All of the Knicks issues have a 'common denominator'

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

By the estimation of Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, there is one long thread that binds the New York Knicks in a state of consistent ineptitude.

In an "Ask Me Anything" thread on Reddit, user "sackshow" asked Morey: "What should the Knicks do to not suck forever?"

You could almost hear Morey's trademark deadpan delivery in his response.

"There is a common denominator to all their issues," Morey said, cryptically.

Since current Knicks owner James Dolan's family assumed full control over Madison Square Garden and the Knicks in March 1997 (they previously owned just 50 percent in 1994), Knicks fans have seen eight playoff appearances in 21 seasons, including the team's Finals loss in the strike-shortened 1999 season. With the halcyon days of the Patrick Ewing-led Knicks teams firmly in the rear view, the Knickerbockers have only made the postseason four times since the start of the 2001-02 season.

Morey never elaborated on what exactly the common through line is in the Knicks recent run of disappointing showings, but if he has indeed cracked the code, perhaps Dolan should consult his expertise the next time the longtime Rockets executive is looking for freelance work.
