Boston Marathon hero to run race for 1st time
Five years after he helped pull victims to safety in the immediate aftermath of the bombings that left three people dead and hundreds more injured, Carlos Arredondo will run the Boston Marathon for the first time.
Arredondo, who lives just outside of Boston, is running to raise money for the Arredondo Family Foundation, an organization he and his wife Melida started to help in the prevention of military-related suicides. The couple's oldest son Alexander was killed during his second tour of duty in Iraq in 2004 and their younger son Brian took his own life in 2011 after suffering from depression and drug addiction following his brother's death.
So far, Arredondo has raised $2,635 of his $6,500 goal.
"I'm always looking forward to the race," he told Heather Mayer Irvine of Runner's World in March. "We're always the first ones at the finish, cheering. This year, I want the opportunity to experience that."
The 2018 Boston Marathon will be held Monday, April 16.
