The San Diego Padres were shut out 7-0 Thursday by the San Francisco Giants and entered the history books in the strangest of ways in the process.

San Diego recorded just one hit against a pair of Giants pitchers - starter Chris Stratton and reliever Derek Law - which came courtesy of starting pitcher Clayton Richard, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the third inning for Padres starter Bryan Mitchell.

With the knock, the Padres became the only team in the modern era to have their only hit come from a pitcher who was pinch-hitting, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Richard, who has 35 career hits, only appeared in the game to hit for Mitchell who was having control problems and was later replaced on the mound by Jordan Lyles.
