The Boston Red Sox are off to a hot start in 2018, and partial credit is due to the 14 shutout innings David Price has thrown across his first two starts.

In fact, Price's pair of seven-inning shutout performances puts him in the conversation for one of the best starts a Red Sox pitcher has had to begin a season in recent memory.

Start IP H BB SO

2 7 3 3 5

Through his first two starts, both against the Tampa Bay Rays, Price owns a 0.71 WHIP. Even further, if he can manage to maintain his shutout streak for one more seven-inning start, he would be the fourth pitcher in history to open a season with three such starts and first since Luis Tiant in 1966. Harry Brecheen and Ray Caldwell also managed the feat in 1948 and 1914, respectively.

As it is, three pitchers in Red Sox team history have thrown at least seven shutout innings across their first two starts, with Mel Parnell the most recent back in 1949.

Following Boston's walk-off victory in the 12th inning against the Rays on Thursday, the Red Sox improved their record to 6-1. As the schedule stands now, Price's next start is lining up to be against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.
