White Sox score bizarre run on Granderson's bobbled non-catch

Dan Hamilton / USA TODAY Sports

Well, that was strange.

In the top of the fifth inning of Wednesday's contest between the Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, Yoan Moncada came within inches of hitting a grand slam to blow the game - which was tied 1-1 with one out in the inning - wide open. Blue Jays outfielder Curtis Granderson appeared to foil him with a leap at the wall, bobbling the ball and catching it as it fell to him while lying on the ground.

Granderson then threw the ball to third, where Welington Castillo had not tagged up to score as expected. The ruling, at that point, was that it was a catch and there were two outs in the inning. Upon review, however, that wasn't the case.

The ball clearly struck the wall before Granderson caught it. The umpires therefore declared it a hit after video review, and every runner advanced one base, allowing Chicago's second run to score.

While Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson stepped on third base after receiving Granderson's throw, it didn't count as a force out because the play had initially been ruled a catch on the field, forcing each runner to retreat to their previous base.

Hopefully that clears it all up.

Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez then hit outfielder Avisail Garcia - again with the bases loaded - to put across another run and extend the lead to 3-1 in favor of the White Sox.
