Yankees place Hicks on DL with intercostal strain

Less than 24 hours after their season-opening victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, the New York Yankees have lost one of their regulars to injury, placing center fielder Aaron Hicks on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a right intercostal muscle strain.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled outfielder Billy McKinney from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The outfielder told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com that he will be shut down for three days before resuming baseball activities. Hicks also shared that he expects to be back in the minimum 10 days.

Hicks, who enjoyed a breakout campaign last year, got his 2018 campaign off to a strong start, too, going 2-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts Thursday in his club's 6-1 win at Rogers Centre. It's unclear how he strained his intercostal muscle.

Hicks' injury is the latest blow to the Yankees' outfield depth, which had already been compromised by spring injuries to Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) and Clint Frazier (concussion). In his absence, the Yankees could bump Brett Gardner over to center, with either Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, or Tyler Wade taking over in left field.
