Vazquez commits immediate future to Toronto FC

Toronto FC's Victor Vazquez signed a multi-year contract extension with the club on Wednesday, ensuring the playmaker will remain a part of Greg Vanney's fold as it builds on the best season in MLS history.

Vazquez, who arrived from Mexican side Cruz Azul last February, was considered the missing piece in TFC's championship puzzle, ultimately helping the Reds achieve a record single-season points total and an unprecedented treble last year.

The Barcelona product registered 16 assists in 2017 - good for second in MLS - and also earned a spot in the league's Best XI after a successful debut campaign.

"Following the conclusion of the 2016 season, teams within MLS started to figure out they could sit back on us. It was critical for our group to find a top-level talent that could help unlock teams and put us over the top. Victor ultimately would become that piece, helping us in our success last season in winning the treble," general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement.

"We are pleased to get this deal done so that Victor can help us defend our titles this season and beyond."

Vazquez pulled in $700,000 last year, according to the MLS Players Association, putting him fourth on TFC's earnings list behind Sebastian Giovinco, Michael Bradley, and Jozy Altidore.
