Report: Twins expected to re-sign Mauer to short-term deal next winter

All signs are pointing to Joe Mauer being a Minnesota Twin for life.

The 34-year-old is entering the final season of an eight-year, $184-million extension, but it looks likely the two sides will agree to a one- or two-year deal this winter to keep Mauer in Minnesota, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Mauer stated his desire to remain with the Twins last month, saying he could never see himself wearing another uniform.

"No, not really, to be honest," Mauer said when asked if he could see himself with another team next season. "This is where I want to be. This is where my family is, where my daughters are growing up. I have no intention of going anywhere else. Hopefully it doesn't come to that."

Born in St. Paul and drafted by Minnesota with the first pick in the 2001 MLB Draft, Mauer has spent his entire 14-year career with the Twins. He currently sits ninth on the franchise list in games played and RBIs, eighth in hits, fifth in on-base percentage, and fourth in doubles.

An MVP in 2009 while serving as the team's catcher, Mauer has transitioned to first base over the last four seasons. While he lacks power - hitting just seven home runs last season - Mauer still slashed .305/.384/.417 with 36 doubles, 71 RBIs and just 83 strikeouts in 141 games.

The Twins have $38.95 million committed in guaranteed salary next season, according to Cots Baseball Contracts, with Mauer, Lance Lynn, Brian Dozier, Eduardo Escobar, and Zach Duke all impending free agents.
