White Sox OF Delmonico suffers shoulder injury in collision with teammate

The Chicago White Sox may have lost an important piece of their lineup in a scary collision Sunday.

During the South Siders' Cactus League contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks, left fielder Nicky Delmonico collided with shortstop Tyler Saladino while both players chased after a pop-up. Delmonico got the worst of it, as he collapsed to the ground in pain clutching his arm after Saladino - who had sprinted out to shallow left field - appeared to run right through him. He was helped off the field by the training staff.

Delmonico suffered a left shoulder subluxation - otherwise known as a partial shoulder dislocation, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune - on the play, the team announced. He will be reevaluated Monday.

Saladino remained in the game after the collision, but was later removed and placed in concussion protocol. He was later diagnosed with what the White Sox termed a "mild concussion," and will be out of action for a minimum of seven days.

Delmonico, 25, made an impact during his brief stay with the White Sox last season, putting up a .262/.373/.482 slash line with nine homers and 23 RBIs over 43 games in his first taste of the big leagues. He was considered a likely candidate to be an Opening Day starter for Chicago, either in left field or at designated hitter.

The White Sox had already been hit hard by the injury bug this spring prior to Sunday's game. Top outfield prospect Luis Robert sprained a ligament in his thumb Saturday and is expected to be out for approximately 10 weeks, while Jake Burger, the club's first-round pick last June, could miss the entire season due to a ruptured Achilles' tendon.
