Fun with small samples: 10 random stat lines from 1st week of spring training

Spring training stats are relatively meaningless, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun over-analyzing some of the numbers put up during the exhibition schedule.

Here are 10 random stat lines from the first week of spring training.

Kyle Jensen, Giants

The early leader in home runs and OPS is a 29-year-old non-roster invite in Giants camp who owns just 17 games of MLB experience. Jensen is 4-for-7 with three home runs, seven RBIs, and five walks in six games, and has scored more runs (8) than he has at-bats. In 17 career games in the majors with the Diamondbacks, he hit .194/.265/.452 with two home runs and two walks.

Mookie Betts, Red Sox

It's been a frustrating start to the spring schedule for Betts. The same guy who went 129 regular-season plate appearances without a strikeout is 0-for-7 with three strikeouts and one walk through his first three games. Betts only struck out three times in 51 at-bats last spring.

Jack Anderson, Mariners

There hasn't been a worse pitching performance this spring than the one from Anderson. The 24-year-old Mariners prospect allowed five runs (three earned) off four hits, hitting an additional two batters in his only appearance of the spring. Of the seven batters he faced, Anderson didn't record a single out.

Richie Shaffer, Indians

Shaffer has certainly made a strong early impression as a non-roster invite to Indians camp. The former first-round pick leads the majors with nine RBIs thanks to a pair of home runs and a triple. Not bad for a player who has 10 RBIs to his name in 51 career MLB games.

Texas Rangers

After finishing third in the majors in home runs last season, the Rangers are the only club without a homer this spring. Joey Gallo, Rougned Odor, Shin-Soo Choo, and Nomar Mazara are a combined 6-for-23.

Dario Alvarez, Cubs

The strikeouts for the Cubs reliever are certainly encouraging, though the rest of his numbers aren't. Alvarez has struck out five batters in two innings of work but also owns an 18.00 ERA and 3.00 WHIP thanks to four runs off three hits (one home run) and three walks.

Mason Williams, Reds

They might have to start calling him Mason Two-Bags. Williams has collected four hits in nine at-bats this spring, with each of them coming as a double. The 26-year-old non-roster invite has four career doubles in 25 big-league games across three seasons.

Allen Craig, Padres

Craig hasn't appeared in the majors since 2015 when he posted a .239 OBP with seven walks in 36 games, but he's thus far shown the type of plate discipline that made him an All-Star in 2013. He's walked a spring-leading five times in nine at-bats for a .533 OBP.

Raimel Tapia, Rockies

It doesn't appear Tapia has his legs under him yet. The Rockies outfielder has been caught stealing in all three of his attempts after swiping 8-of-10 bases over the last two years in the majors.

Tommy Milone, Nationals

After posting a career-worst 12.1 H/9 innings last season, Milone has been almost unhittable in two spring appearances. The veteran lefty has allowed just one hit while striking out six in four innings.
