Arizona shooting guard Allonzo Trier was declared ineligible by the NCAA on Thursday after a January drug test found a trace amount of a banned substance in his system, according to azcentral.com.

This is the second time Trier has failed a drug test. Before the start of the 2016-17 season, he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, which cost him 19 games. Trier appealed the decision, and was allowed back once the drug was completely out of his system.

"The amount detected (in late January 2018) was miniscule by scientific standards and appears to be a remnant of a substance, which the NCAA agreed, Allonzo had unknowingly ingested in 2016," Arizona's athletic department said in a statement. "The university is appealing the decision and is hopeful that Allonzo will regain his eligibility soon."

A source told ESPN that Trier was involved in a car accident in the summer of 2016, and his camp told the NCAA that the banned substance was given to him without his knowledge by someone close to his family as he recovered from his injuries.

The 22-year-old junior had been averaging 19.6 points on 53.9 percent shooting for the Wildcats, which is second overall in the Pac-12 Conference behind teammate DeAndre Ayton (19.7).
