Orlando Cepeda, the 80-year-old San Francisco Giants legend who was rushed to a Bay Area hospital Monday night, remains in critical condition following a cardiac incident, the Giants said in a statement.
"Please keep Orlando and his family in your thoughts and prayers," the statement reads.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999, Cepeda spent nine of his 17 major-league seasons in San Francisco, earning the National League Rookie of the Year award with the Giants in 1958 and receiving All-Star nominations in each of the following six years. Cepeda, the NL MVP in 1967, smacked 379 homers throughout his illustrious career - he led the league with 46 in 1961 - and has maintained close ties with the Giants organization in the decades following his retirement in 1974.
"Orlando is a real Giant, a Baby Bull, the fans love him," Felipe Alou, Cepeda's former teammate and road roommate, told Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. "I hope he'll be OK. He's a great friend."
