Report: Marlins have spoken to free-agent OFs Cabrera, Jay

Just because the Miami Marlins are rebuilding, doesn't mean they're out of the free-agent game.

Miami has reportedly spoken to a pair of free-agent outfielders in Melky Cabrera and Jon Jay about potential contracts, according to Sirius XM's Craig Mish.

The Marlins appear to prefer signing either of the veterans to a one-year deal, Mish reports. Cabrera, who was already linked to the Marlins this winter, reportedly desires a two-year contract and has made that known to interested teams. Miami would apparently jump at the chance to sign him if he were to settle for one year.

Due to Cabrera's multi-year demands, Jay - who spent last season with the Chicago Cubs on a one-year deal - might be a better bet to join the Marlins on their preferred terms.

Either Jay or Cabrera could help the rebuilding team fill some corner outfield holes in the short term as their young players get more development time, while also serving as potentially important trade chips ahead of this summer's trade deadline.

The 32-year-old Jay appeared in 141 games for the Cubs last season and hit .296/.374/.375 with 23 extra-base hits, while seeing time defensively at all three outfield positions. His lack of power might play well in Marlins Park, where his speed-driven on-base style could be helped by the stadium's spacious dimensions.

Cabrera, 33, slashed .285/.324/.423 with 17 homers, 85 RBIs, and 30 doubles in 156 games last season split between the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals. While not the greatest defender, he has experience in both corner outfield positions.

Cabrera has also been connected to the Royals, Baltimore Orioles, and Pittsburgh Pirates this offseason. Baltimore has reportedly shown interest in Jay, as well.
