Redick calls focus on Fultz's recovery 'obsessive'
J.J. Redick is one of the NBA's most media-savvy players, but even he can't understand why reporters and fans seem so interested in Philadelphia 76ers teammate Markelle Fultz's prolonged rehab from a shoulder injury.
"It is annoying, the guy's 19, he's working his ass off," Redick said at practice Friday, per Philly Voice's Kyle Neubeck. "I understand fans want to see his progress, but this is maybe going to be a longer process than we all hoped for. I don't get the coming in here every day to like, watch him shoot pull-up jumpers. It's a little obsessive."
Earlier, during shootaround, Redick seemed to have been heard on video saying toward the media, "The kid's f---ing 19, man. Holy s---. Y'all are sick."
Fultz's recovery timetable remains up in the air. The No. 1 overall pick in last summer's draft is still limited to shooting inside the paint, according to Sixers GM Bryan Colangelo, who added Friday that it's not known if Fultz will play again this season.
The rookie appeared in the season's first four games, shooting a lackluster 33 percent from the floor and 50 percent at the foul line before being sidelined.
Philadelphia contains one of the most rabid fan bases in sports, and a media that can charitably be described as tough at times. Fultz's situation is somewhat puzzling, however, given the organization has suggested the rookie's oddball shooting mechanics may have contributed to the injury.
The precise problem with Fultz's shoulder has not been specified publicly, although it affects his right shooting side.
