Leicester City wantaway Riyad Mahrez returned to training Friday after a self-imposed exile, and the Algerian international was quick to clear the air.

A failed deadline-day move to Manchester City saw Mahrez miss a defeat to Everton and a home draw with Swansea City, and the 2015-16 Premier League winner has defended his prolonged hiatus.

"Over the past 10 days, many people claiming to be my friend have spoken about me and things they know nothing about," Mahrez told the BBC's Simon Stone.

"Leicester City were always aware of my whereabouts and had knowledge of my thinking either directly or via my advisors."

Leicester City also released a statement Friday, saying: "Riyad Mahrez has today (Friday) returned to training with the Leicester City squad.

"Riyad remains a greatly valued member of Claude Puel's squad and is focused, together with his teammates, on achieving further success with Leicester City."

Puel admitted earlier in the week Mahrez is unlikely to play Saturday against his suitor City at the Etihad.

"I think Riyad will be not available," said Puel. "I hope he can get his head right and come back with us and work hard. The best way is to come back and enjoy his football."
