Faced with one of the most hostile offseasons in recent memory, free agents hosting their own spring training "will happen" after going unsigned all winter, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

The MLBPA had reportedly been considering starting a camp for days, and could find a location and house players as early as Tuesday, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. Somewhat interestingly, one notable free agent also told Passan that he would rather stay home.

The report comes a day after union director Tony Clark issued a statement implying that a number of baseball players remain unemployed with spring around the corner because "a significant number of teams are engaged in a race to the bottom."

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred issued a statement in response to Clark saying teams "are committed to putting a winning product on the field," and blaming clubs for the lack of movement this winter is "unfair, unwarranted, and inflammatory."

Pitchers and catchers will begin reporting to spring training facilities for teams as early as Feb. 12.

Free agents who remain on the open market with spring training looming include J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer, Yu Darvish, Jake Arrieta, Alex Cobb, Lance Lynn, Greg Holland, and Mike Moustakas.
