Anders needs extra 50 minutes, 2 others miss weight for UFC Belem
UFC Belem got off to a rocky start at Friday's weigh-ins.
Eryk Anders, who's slated to take on Lyoto Machida in Saturday's main event, tipped the scales at 187.9 pounds, nearly two full pounds above his middleweight opponent and former light heavyweight champion. Anders exceeded the one-pound allowance.
Anders was given an extra hour to make weight, as he's in the main event. He checked back in at 186 pounds after 50 minutes, making the event official, according to MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz.
The extra time was permitted after a doctor determined that Anders would be able to safely cut the excess weight in time. Machida's team agreed to the ruling, as there were issues with the visiting fighters' hotel hot water Thursday night.
Co-main event fighter Pedro Munhoz missed his bantamweight allowance by four pounds. He'll face John Dodson.
Finally, Michel Prazeres exceeded the lightweight limit for his fight against Desmond Green by five pounds. As a repeat offender (he's come in heavy in three of his last four fights), the Brazilian commission will recommend he move up to welterweight for his next bout, as per its newly adopted policies regarding weight cutting and management.
Prazeres-Green will proceed as an official catchweight fight, while no decision has been made yet regarding the status of Dodson-Munhoz, according to Cruz.
Under Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission rules, all fighters who miss weight will be fined 20 percent of their show money, and 20 percent of win money. Typically, the CABMMA can collect a portion of the fines, but this time they've decided to give all the money to the opponents, according to Alexander K. Lee of MMA Fighting.
