With the transfer window creaking to a close, Newcastle United has made a last-second move for Leicester City striker Islam Slimani.

The Magpies announced the move 30 minutes after the deadline, adding that the 29-year-old Algerian international joins the St. James' Park locals on loan for the remainder of the season.

Slimani marks Newcastle's second significant signing of the window, joining Chelsea loanee Kenedy on Tyneside.

Out of favour with Claude Puel at the King Power Stadium, Slimani joins fellow forwards Ahmed Musa and Leonardo Ulloa on the way out of the East Midlands side.

Since joining the shock 2015-16 Premier League champ the summer after its top-flight conquest, Slimani made 17 appearances this season under Puel, scoring five times.

"It’s a great thing for me and for Newcastle. I’m happy to be here. Hopefully, I can come here and be able to give them a hand," Slimani in the announcement.

Slimani's arrival at Newcastle comes as Rafa Benitez ships out mercurial striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham.
