Report: Hosmer pushing for contract of 8 years or more

With spring-training games nearly three weeks away, Eric Hosmer - one of the top free agents still remaining on a robust open market - and his representatives are still pushing for a deal longer than seven years, according to a report from Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

The 28-year-old Hosmer is eligible for free agency at a slightly younger age than the league average. An eight-year deal would carry the first baseman through his age-35 season. J.D. Martinez, the other top free-agent slugger, will turn 31 in August.

Over seven major-league seasons, all with the Kansas City Royals, Hosmer owns a .284/.342/.439 slash line. The one-time All-Star collected his fourth Gold Glove and hit 25 home runs in 2017 while playing in all 162 games.

Of note, the Royals recently traded away Brandon Moss - their only remaining player with major-league experience at first base - to the Oakland Athletics. Along with the Royals, the San Diego Padres have been linked most heavily to Hosmer this offseason.
