Clubs outside the Premier League hoping to sign Emre Can to a pre-contract in January were dealt a blow with news that the German international will meet with Liverpool officials to discuss a new contract.

With his deal set to expire in June, reports have indicated Can could be headed for the Anfield exits. A move to Juventus, specifically, could be on the horizon as the Italian side has reportedly shown interest in procuring the 24-year-old's services this summer.

However, Liverpool appears to be reluctant to let Can walk away for free as club officials get set to hold further talks in an effort to sign him to an extension, according to Danny Gallagher of Sky Sports.

It's believed the last round of negotiations between the two sides was abandoned over Liverpool's refusal to include a buyout clause in Can's contract.

A report earlier this month suggested Can and Juventus reached an agreement over a five-year contract that would pay the versatile midfielder £85,000 a week.

Clubs from outside of England are free to negotiate with other teams' players in the final months of their contracts, whereas Premier League outfits must wait until the deal expires.

The 24-year-old has been a regular contributor for Jurgen Klopp's team this season, appearing in 18 of Liverpool's 23 Premier League matches.
