It took a replay, extra time, and a 112th-minute goal by a rookie, but West Ham United ultimately avoided embarrassment.

On Tuesday, the club defeated Shrewsbury Town 1-0 in a FA Cup third-round rematch at London Stadium, as Reece Burke, who grew up supporting the Hammers in Newham, ended the Shrews' resistance with his first professional goal to take his club to the fourth round. The English centre-back struck the ball off the underside of the crossbar with a half-volley in what was the tie's 202nd minute.

The first leg was a scoreless draw in which West Ham lacked flavour as Joe Hart returned to the town of his birth. Shrewsbury looked the better club, and David Moyes, who once took the pitch for the Shrews, admitted the Hammers were "fortunate" to still be in the competition.

It was a similar story in the second leg, as chances were few and far between. Shrewsbury had the best opportunity before extra time, with Stefan Payne failing to capitalise on a breakaway as Hart produced a wonderful save.

West Ham will visit Wigan Athletic or AFC Bournemouth in the FA Cup's fourth round. The Latics are hosting the Cherries at the DW Stadium in a replay on Wednesday.
