The first-ever Super Bowl was played on this day in 1967 and pitted the AFL champion Kansas City Chiefs against the NFL champion Green Bay Packers at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The increased competition between players and fan bases led to talks of uniting the AFL and NFL in the 1960s. This game marked the first step in the eventual merger that would come three years later in 1970.
Len Dawson carried his Chiefs to an 11-2-1 regular-season record, but met a far superior Packers team in what was then known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game.
