Alabama was oh so close.
The Crimson Tide came within a 36-yard field goal of capturing their fifth national championship since 2009, but a kick from Andy Pappanastos sailed wide left, sending the game with Georgia into overtime tied at 20.
The attempt was Pappanastos' second miss Monday night after he missed a 40-yard attempt in the first quarter. Alabama subsequently won the coin toss to begin overtime and elected to defer.
