De Jong released by Galatasaray, joins Mainz until end of season

Nigel de Jong wasn't out of work for long with confirmation Friday that the Dutch midfielder has joined Mainz on a free transfer hours after his contract with Galatasaray was terminated by mutual consent.

The 33-year old signed a contract until the end of the season to mark his return to the Bundesliga for the first time in nine years when he was a member of Hamburg SV.

"I know that the team are well organised and want to play good, attacking football. I like the club and its history," De Jong said. "They have established themselves very well in the Bundesliga. I want to help the team and the club achieve their goals for the season. I would like to thank Rouven Schröder and Sandro Schwarz for giving me the chance to come here. I am really looking forward to making my return in the Bundesliga."

Along with Hamburg and Galatasaray, the defensive midfielder previously plied his trade with Ajax, Manchester City, AC Milan, and the Los Angeles Galaxy.
