White says Nunes gets next shot at Cyborg

It appears Cris Cyborg will be sharing the Octagon with another UFC champion in her next fight.

Speaking with Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole on Thursday, UFC president Dana White revealed he aims to book the featherweight queen in a dance with reigning bantamweight titleholder Amanda Nunes next.

"First of all, Amanda Nunes wants to fight her. Amanda Nunes wants to fight Cyborg. That is the fight to make and that is the fight I will make. That’s the fight," White said.

"Amanda Nunes is a big strong, powerful puncher. I think she matches up very well with Cyborg, too, and I think that’s a fun fight. That’s the fight to make."

Cyborg maintained she was ready, willing, and able to defend the crown she just retained in a unanimous verdict over Holly Holm at UFC 219, but preferably against Megan Anderson - previously citing her reluctance to take on a fellow Brazilian champion in Nunes.

The featherweight champ recently went as far as claiming she'd agreed to meet Anderson in her native Australia at UFC 221 in just five weeks' time, only for the Aussie to echo a report from MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani and state the matchup had not yet been offered, nor could she make the date. With Anderson in limbo and the featherweight division short on contenders, White has now tapped Nunes, who's voiced her designs on becoming a two-division champion before.

The 29-year-old Nunes was last seen defending her bantamweight strap in a razor-close split decision over Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 215, and was most recently attached to a third title defense against Raquel Pennington for UFC 219 until the would-be challenger suffered a horrific leg injury in an ATV accident this past October.

White did not offer an exact timeline for the champion vs. champion tilt.
