Report: Florida State technically shouldn't be bowl eligible this season

Thanks to a rescheduled win over Louisiana-Monroe in early December, Florida State finished the season 6-6, awarding it a place in a bowl game for the 36th straight season.

Just six days before the Seminoles meet Southern Mississippi in the Independence Bowl, College Football Reddit uncovered that Florida State actually isn't bowl eligible and shouldn't be playing in the game.

College Football Insider Brett McMurphy confirmed Thursday that Florida State's win over FCS-member Delaware State shouldn't have counted toward the Seminoles' bowl eligibility this season. Delaware State did not have enough scholarship grants-in-aid over a two-year span to qualify as a bowl-eligible win for opponents. That leaves Florida State with only five wins that should count toward eligibility, eliminating it from contention for a postseason contest.

A source told McMurphy that it's too late to change Florida State's participation, so the contest will go on as planned.

To make matters worse, Buffalo, Western Michigan, and UTSA all won six games this season but did not get selected for a bowl game. If the discrepancy was discovered earlier, one of those three schools could have gone to the Independence Bowl.
