Wayne Rooney isn't ready to crown Manchester City as the best team in Premier League history.

City thumped Tottenham 4-1 on Saturday to increase its unbeaten league run this season to 18 matches.

However, the former England captain, who left Manchester United for his boyhood club Everton last summer, insists there's plenty of work ahead for Pep Guardiola's side. Rooney acknowledges City's trophy haul will ultimately determine the team's place in history, but he doesn't think the current runaway leader is better than the 2007-08 United squad.

"I'm not sure they are quite there. They would have to keep going and do a lot more," Rooney told TalkSPORT. "There have been so many great teams throughout the years in the Premier League. This City team needs to win trophies and needs to do it for a longer period to be in that bracket.

"The best ever? I would go with the Man United team from 2008."

The 2007-08 edition of Manchester United managed to win the league by two points over second-placed Chelsea, and went on to also lift the Champions League trophy at the expense of the Blues.

City's start has drawn comparisons to the invincible Arsenal side that went undefeated to win the Premier League title in 2004. But Rooney feels City is incapable of sustaining its unbeaten run and emulating that feat.

"I don't think they can go unbeaten," he added. "They have done incredibly well with the run they have been on, but the Premier League is so difficult, especially now with this Christmas period coming up."
