The Philadelphia Phillies have traded shortstop Freddy Galvis to the San Diego Padres for minor-league right-hander Enyel De Los Santos, the club announced.

Galvis' addition enhances San Diego's chances of landing free-agent first baseman Eric Hosmer (who wants to play for a winner), Nightengale adds.

With Galvis on his way out, prospect J.P Crawford is projected to take over as the Phillies' starting shortstop.

The 28-year-old Galvis had spent his entire six-year career with the Phillies before the trade. He appeared in all 162 games last season, hitting .255/.309/.382 with 29 doubles, 61 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases.

De Los Santos was the 13th-ranked prospect in the Padres' farm system, according to MLB Pipeline. The 21-year-old Dominican spent 2017 pitching at Double-A San Antonio where he was 10-6 with a 4.14 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 26 appearances (24 starts).

In a corresponding move, the Padres designated right-hander Jose Ruiz for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Galvis.
