Major League Baseball is reportedly launching an investigation to determine whether Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani's medical information - which disclosed his elbow injury - was leaked to the press by club officials earlier this week, sources told Buster Olney of ESPN.

No specific clubs were cited by Olney as being under investigation.

Seven teams - the Angels, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, and Texas Rangers - were initially named as finalists for Ohtani's services after his posting in November.

Ohtani ultimately chose the Angels last week to much fanfare, but the cheers quickly turned to concerns once his medical information became public. The 23-year-old's physical revealed that he's been dealing with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, and that he had received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in October.

Ohtani's agent, Nez Balelo, said last week the PRP injection was done strictly as a "preventative measure," while the Angels said they were not concerned by the injury.

Because of his unique skill set, the Angels plan to use Ohtani as both a starting pitcher and designated hitter - as he did in Japan - though general manager Billy Eppler said it's unlikely Ohtani will play the outfield in 2018.
