Stanton advises Marlins fans to 'watch from afar if you’re going to watch'

Giancarlo Stanton threw on a New York Yankees uniform for the first time on Monday at his introductory press conference and wasn't hesitant about giving his thoughts on his now-former employer, the Miami Marlins.

"I would say to hang in there," Stanton said in front of reporters when asked if he had any advice for Marlins fans. "They're hurting. They're going to go through some more tough years. I would advise them not to give up. Just keep hope. Maybe watch from afar if you're going to watch."

The 28-year-old's comments came a couple hours after he thanked the Marlins organization and the city of Miami on Instagram while offering up some shade in the same post.

Miami is expected to go through a full rebuild and continue to slash payroll in order to do so. Along with trading Stanton, they also shipped Dee Gordon to the Seattle Mariners last Thursday.

Stanton and cash considerations - reportedly valued at $30 million - were officially acquired from the Marlins for second baseman Starlin Castro and a pair of prospects hours before the press conference.

The reigning National League MVP hit 59 home runs and drove in 132 runs last season and will join an already impressive Yankees lineup containing Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez in New York.

New York was one win away from reaching the World Series last season, losing in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series to the Houston Astros.
