It appears SMU isn't wasting any time searching for its new head coach, as sources told Adam Rittenberg of ESPN that Sonny Dykes has emerged as the leading candidate for the position.

A deal hasn't been finalized between Dykes and the school, but the former Cal coach could be hired as early as Monday should an agreement be reached.

Dykes is 41-44 in his career as an FBS head coach with the Golden Bears and Louisiana Tech, and is known for his high-powered passing attack. In all four seasons with Cal, the offense was ranked in the top 11 nationally for passing yards per game.

The SMU job became available when Arkansas hired Chad Morris as its new head coach last week. The Mustangs were 7-5 this season and will play Louisiana Tech in the Frisco Bowl on Dec. 20.
