Lomachenko hands Rigondeaux 1st pro loss in dominant showing
For the first time in boxing history, a pair of men who have both won two Olympic gold medals squared off in the ring as professionals, and youth prevailed on a snowy night in New York City.
29-year-old Vasyl Lomachenko, who won gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, took the bout to Guillermo Rigondeaux from the opening bell, forcing the 37-year-old to quit on his stool after the sixth round.
It was the first loss for Rigondeaux - who won gold medals for Cuba at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics - since a 2003 amateur fight. He had amassed a 17-0 professional record prior to Saturday's loss but was no match for the hard-charging Ukrainian.
Lomachenko improved his record as a professional fighter to 10-1 with the victory after amassing an incredible 396-1 mark in the amateur ranks. The confident southpaw predicted he would finish the fight before the 12th round to Dan Rafael of ESPN, and he delivered in a dominant showing at Madison Square Garden.
