We need to talk about: Herm Edwards' really odd press conference

FootballASU/Twitter

Athletic director Ray Anderson acknowledged off the bat Monday that his decision to hire Herm Edwards as Arizona State head coach might be "weird," and it took no time to see why as Edwards was introduced to the media.

After unveiling Edwards to reporters and announcing his addition to the program, Anderson turned the floor over to the coach's agent.

Let's pause for a second.

When was the last time an agent was asked to speak at a press conference in which his client was being unveiled as the head coach?

Unpause ... and now for what Phil de Picciotto had to say of his client, via Kyle Bonagura of ESPN:

"I have no doubt that he will put a lot of points on the scoreboard of life for everyone in this community."

Huh?

Perhaps de Picciotto has been in cahoots with Butch Jones, the former Tennessee coach who once awarded his team the extremely prestigious "championship of life."

The presser only got weirder from there, as the new Sun Devils coach apparently had the proverbial angel and devil fighting for attention on his shoulders.

And as if it couldn't get any weirder, Edwards dropped this dandy of a line, via David Ubben of The Athletic:

"We don't huddle anymore in our society. That's the problem with it, to be honest."

The entire event was strange.

In any event, Edwards takes over a program that went 7-5 in 2017, reignited by his everlasting passion for the sport that fuels his soul.
