Report: Tennessee fires athletic director John Currie

It appears Tennessee's disastrous coaching search will have a new person at the helm, as Chris Low of ESPN reports that the school fired athletic director John Currie on Friday morning after just eight months on the job.

Since opting to fire head coach Butch Jones on Nov. 12, the Volunteers have struck out with every candidate they've attempted to target, and scuttled a deal with Greg Schiano due to a fan revolt.

After walking away from the agreement with the Ohio State defensive coordinator, Tennessee was reportedly turned down by Duke's David Cutcliffe, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, Purdue's Jeff Brohm, and NC State's Dave Doeren.

The most recent reports indicated Tennessee officials met with Washington State's Mike Leach in Los Angeles late on Thursday night. Currie was apparently very impressed by the offensive guru, and was reportedly ready to hire the 56-year-old before other Tennessee officials intervened.

Former head coach Phillip Fulmer, now a special adviser to the school's president, has been sabotaging the search process from the beginning in hopes of being named Tennessee's next athletic director, sources told college football insider Brett McMurphy.
