Mississippi State star Nick Fitzgerald suffers graphic ankle injury
Mississippi State's star quarterback Nick Fitzgerald left Thursday's game against Ole Miss after suffering a graphic ankle injury in the first quarter.
Fitzgerald was tackled to the ground on a rushing play and fell awkwardly on his ankle, immediately staying down as players from both teams looked away with pained expressions. He was eventually put in an air cast and carted off the field.
It's a huge loss for the Bulldogs, as Fitzgerald has been the focal point of Dan Mullen's high-powered offense. The junior standout has 1,770 yards passing and 15 touchdowns on the season while also adding 968 yards on the ground and 14 more scores.
Keytaon Thompson, a four-star quarterback from the class of 2017, replaced Fitzgerald under center.
While the injury certainly looked gruesome, Fitzgerald appeared to be in good spirits as he tweeted out a message shortly after leaving the field.
I’ll be back stronger and better than ever! I love all my Hailstate fam and all I want right now is for all of y’all to ring your bells as loud as you can and support this team to a huge egg bowl win! #HaiIState
