The offseason hot stove may be lukewarm, but the Seattle Mariners appear to be elevating the heat.

Seattle is talking with outfielder Jon Jay, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, who reports momentum in discussions between the two sides.

The light-hitting Jay spent 2017 with the Chicago Cubs after signing a one-year pact worth $8 million. He appeared in 141 games and hit .296/.374/.375 with 34 RBIs.

The 32-year-old veteran owns a .288/.355/.383 slash line during an eight-year career split between the St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, and Cubs.

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto has been one of the more active front office executives during the offseason, making a trade with the Oakland Athletics to acquire first baseman Ryon Healy, and adding pitcher Nick Rumbelow from the New York Yankees.

Seattle also traded pitcher Thyago Viera to the Chicago White Sox for international signing pool money and reportedly signed catcher Tuffy Gosewisch and outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis to minor-league contracts.
