4 reasons to watch Saturday's underwhelming schedule

Jeff Hanisch / USA TODAY Sports

At first glance, Saturday's incredibly underwhelming college football schedule seems like the perfect time to tend to those chores you've said you would finish all season.

Our suggestion would be to push those back to December, because, despite the fact there's only one matchup of ranked teams this week, there's still plenty of reasons to catch the action.

Here's the best four:

Finding out if Wisconsin is legit

How is it possible that there's a Power 5 team sitting 10-0 on the year and nobody knows if they are actually good or not? Ladies and gentleman, take a quick look at Wisconsin's schedule this season and you'll find the answer. The Badgers have negotiated an extremely mild set of opponents with ease all season, yet find themselves outside the top-4 in the CFP rankings. The Badgers schedule has been so poor that both Clemson and Oklahoma are ranked ahead of them, despite sitting with one loss each.

Wisconsin gets its big chance to prove a point this weekend with No. 24 Michigan coming to town. Both teams feature top-3 defensive units in the entire country, so expect a low-scoring smashmouth affair - Big Ten football at its finest. By 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, we should know for certain whether to take Wisconsin seriously or not.

The scoreboard at the Coliseum will read UCLA versus USC, but the most hyped battle in Los Angeles on Saturday will be the quarterback showdown between Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold. Not only will the two star pivots be battling for local bragging rights, but the No. 1 overall spot in the 2018 NFL Draft may also be on the line.

Darnold certainly holds the advantage of playing for the far superior team, but a strong showing by Rosen could make the southern California rivalry one of the best games of the night. If nothing else, there's a reason for San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants fans to tune in.

Mayfield\Love Heisman battle

The Heisman Trophy appears to be Baker Mayfield's to lose at this point, and the Oklahoma star can further strengthen his grip on the prestigious award against lowly Kansas this weekend. The standout senior has dominated the college football world this season, leading the country in both completion percentage and quarterback rating. He also sits second in the nation in passing yards and third in touchdown passes for the fourth-ranked Sooners. Expect a monster game out of Mayfield against the 108th-ranked defense in the land.

It appears the only man who can catch Mayfield is Bryce Love, and the Stanford star can remain in shouting distance with a big game against Cal. The Golden Bears rush defense is ranked 71st in the country, which is good news for a man averaging an absurd 9 yards per carry. Love leads the nation with 1,622 yards on the season, and is coming off a three-touchdown effort against Washington last week. He will need similar production against Cal to remain in the race.

It's the second-last week of the season

The cold, harsh reality that it's the second-last week with a full slate of games makes Saturday must-see television.
