Report: Yankees eyeing trade for Rangers' Profar

The New York Yankees have turned their attention toward possibly trading for Texas Rangers utility man and former top prospect Jurickson Profar, according to a report from Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The Yankees have a glut of pitching to fit onto their 40-man roster leading up to December's Rule 5 Draft, and are motivated to make a deal as opposed to losing an asset with no return through that draft.

Even further, the Rangers are apparently interested in the Yankees' excess pitching, which helped carry them to the American League wild-card game and beyond last season. Pitchers such as Luis Cessa and Chasen Shreve - who did not make the postseason roster - are possible candidates to be unprotected during the Rule 5 Draft.

The 24-year-old Profar has failed to live up to expectations after being named the top prospect in all of baseball prior to the 2013 season. Over 718 plate appearances, he's posted a .229/.309/.329 slash line. After being heralded as a second baseman, he has moved all over the diamond, playing third base, shortstop, first base, and left field.

That being said, while the Yankees may be motivated to make a deal, the team has substantial depth at Profar's position, relying on Starlin Castro and Ronald Torreyes on the big-league roster. Even further, with Didi Gregorius as the club's full-time shortstop, top prospect, Gleyber Torres may be shifted from shortstop to second base or third base.
