The penalty awaiting the Atlanta Braves for circumventing international free-agent rules is shaping up to be hefty.

While commissioner Rob Manfred has not finalized a decision, the Braves are definitely going to lose prospects they've signed out of Latin America, league sources tell The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

The players the Braves lose - which could include highly-touted shortstop Kevin Maitan - will keep their initial signing bonuses before becoming free agents once again. The Braves are also facing the possibility of substantial fines for their actions.

Former Braves general manager John Coppolella resigned in early October when the investigation began. Gordon Blakely, a special assistant to Coppolella, also resigned.
