Mariners acquire Healy from Athletics

Two American League West rivals joined forces Wednesday for the first big trade of the offseason.

The Seattle Mariners acquired infielder Ryon Healy from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for pitcher Emilio Pagan and minor-league infielder Alexander Campos, the team announced.

The 25-year-old Healy impressed in his first appearance with the Athletics in 2016 when he hit .305/.337/.524 with 13 home runs over 72 games. A free swinger, Healy blasted 25 homers while drawing only 23 walks in 149 games in 2017.

Healy showed a bit of versatility in Oakland, playing half the time at designated hitter and splitting the rest between two different infield positions.

"Ryon brings a power bat to our lineup at first base, while providing the flexibility to play third base. He adds to a growing core of productive young players who impact our present and future," Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a statement.

Going the other way is Pagan, who made his MLB debut in 2017 pitching exclusively out of the bullpen for the Mariners. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 3.22 ERA over 50 1/3 innings with 56 strikeouts.

The 17-year-old Campos remains a few years away from the majors, but was listed by MLB.com as the Mariners' 15th-best prospect before the trade. He hit .290/.413/.367 with more walks than strikeouts in his first season in rookie ball.
